A few years back, director Stephen Alex Vasquez decided to take a look at the coming revolution in electronic music in the US, via acts like Steve Aoki, Diplo, Switch, Lil Jon, Pitbull, A-Trak, Dave-1, DJ Premier, Moby, LMFAO, and more. As Justice and David Guetta were making waves in the US, and artists like Kanye West were teaming up with the likes of Daft Punk, it only made sense to start documenting the sea change. What Vasquez didn’t have in terms of filmmaking resources, the upstart interviewer, videographer, and producer more than made up for in sheer tenacity, landing spots with many of the aforementioned artists in their career prime.
The Electro Wars isn’t the highest-quality of documentary you’ve ever seen, but, even three years after its official release, it’s clear to see that the young filmmaker was on to something, nicely connecting the dots between dance music (the now-dreaded “blog house,” in particular) and hip-hop, pop, Latin, and all sorts of other styles into which electronic beats have seeped. Check out the whole one-and-a-half-hour film in its entirety below.
