What Should You do With Those Old Nintendo Cartridges? Of Course Turn Them Into 8-bit Harmonicas
Oh, the age-old art of blowing into videogame cartridges in order to get them to actually work.
Sure, it’s a skill that won’t exactly get you a job these days, but most anyone who grew up around the not-so-far-gone days of cartridge-based videogame consoles had that maneuver imprinted somewhere in their DNA years ago. Now, a Japanese electronics tinkerer by the name of Basami Sentaku (at least according to his YouTube channel) has turned that act into something a whole lot more musical, by spinning old Nintendo games into 8-bit harmonicas.
Sentaku’s clever idea has been showcased in a brief YouTube video, which finds a team of three players blowing into their 8-bit harmonicas for a short, breathy concert. A series of microphones are arranged in a row where the cartridge’s metallic contacts used to be, detecting where the player is blowing and producing notes or sound effects accordingly.
There is no word yet about whether or not these amazing pieces will ever be available to buy, but the mini 8-bit harmonica concert is still definitely worth a watch, and be can be seen in full below.
