In what is now our second festival of the season with a major weather element introduced on the final day, Day 3 of Movement Electronic Music Festival was dictated by rain — lots and lots of rain. What started off as a light drizzle in the afternoon and early evening, quickly progressed to an all out torrential downpour but this did not stop many fans from braving the elements to enjoy a final day at Hart Plaza. The mood was jovial and celebratory, and for a crowd that was already feeling tight knit on the first days, things got even more communal in the inclement elements.
Five must-see acts at this year's Melt! Festival
Since its inception in 1997, the Melt! Festival has developed into one of the premiere electronic music events in all of Europe. Taking place in Ferropolis, Germany, from July 19-21, Melt! originated as a single-day event but has expanded to encompass three days of top-notch music from a star-studded lineup. In order to ensure that Melt! attendees witness the best and the brightest of this year’s talented roster, we’ve compiled a brief list of our top five artists that you simply can’t afford to miss.
Rhye
Initially forming in a rather serendipitous fashion, Rhye, which consists of Mike Milosh and Robin Hannibal, are gaining a lot of steam after the release of their debut album, Woman, this past March. Their minimalistic beats and soulful melodies are sure to make for a set that emanates positive vibes.
Adana Twins
Hamburg, Germany’s Adana Twins have had an explosive year after the release of their hit tune “Juicy Fruit,” which propelled the duo to the top of both the Beatport and Resident Advisor charts.
MS MR
The New York duo consisting of Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow burst into the limelight with their captivating take on synth-based pop music. Combining Plapinger’s ethereal vocals with Hershenow’s production, they’ve developed a melancholic pop sound that many have compared to the likes of Lana Del Rey and Florence Welch.
Motor City Drum Ensemble
Best known for his Raw Cuts series and his unique take on deep house, Danilo Plessow (aka Motor City Drum Ensemble) has risen to stardom of late and shows no indications of slowing down. His fusion of soul, Chicago house, and disco have made this young gun a force to be reckoned with in on the dancefloor.
CHVRCHES
With the release of their recent Recover EP, Glasgow electro-pop group CHVRCHES secured the fifth position on BBC’s Sound of 2013, a list constructed to highlight the most promising artists of the year. Not bad for a band less than two years old.
