Located in the centre of the Baltics, Latvia has a very rich history in electronic dance music. Being familiar with Latvian dance music and feeling enthusiastic about the scene for a while, you would know of the 80’s cult group called “Zodiac” and Janis Krauklis – the Soviet Union’s first epic vinyl DJ.
During the second half of the ’80s, electronic dance music movement was in full swing in the West; and Riga was destined to become a birthplace to what later on revealed a completely new and revolutionary music culture to the Soviet Union. This music was revolutionary and the legacy of this movement completely changed the face of former Soviet Latvia and subsequently that of nowadays Russia. This most definitely influenced further democratisation of the society up until the complete collapse of the old political system.
Artemy Troitsky—one of the leading music critics in Russia comments, “Actually, Riga became the DJ cultural ground for the almighty Soviet state. Such steps and feelings of freedom towards a new reality, which came from Riga, had not existed within our region.”
Creators of ‘Era of Dance’ avoid fully sharing on the plot of this movie and are yet to unveil the date of European premier. It is at the stage of post production and it is most likely to reach Latvia’s movie theaters this fall.
