Chinese police have reportedly detained several hundred partygoers after raiding an event during the early hours of Sunday morning in Shenzhen, south-eastern China.

According to a report in The Guardian, police raided a party—called The Real Deal—taking place on the outskirts of the city, which is home to 10 million inhabitants. China's official news agency, Xinhua, claims that 491 people who attended the party were under investigation, of which more than 100 had tested positive for drugs. Many are still in custody, including, reports say, around 50 foreigners. Of these, at least six are British.

The party's organisers have been throwing regular events since at least 2012, hosting local and international DJs in a tunnel. Events in this particular location have been taking place "every few months" for the past few years, says local news outlet Shenzhen Daily. Many of its attendees are expats. "I feel like this is a way to send a signal to the expat community," an American witness said about the raid.
